Doctor prioritises youth at Baroka
Khumalo, who was confirmed as Baroka’s technical director on Thursday, has been brought in to improve the structures at the club. Baroka are hoping Khumalo can help unearth some talent from Limpopo. Khumalo won two league titles with now Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter and only continued in the assistant coach position for one season with Steve Komphela before he was demoted to a scout. He was tipped for the technical director position at Chiefs, but it seems it was never made available for him to take up. "The game is about venturing into challenges. You might look at a challenge and think it’s difficult, but if you don’t take those challenges, then you can’t gauge yourself to see where you are," Khumalo said at a press conference in Johannesburg on Thursday. "Baroka are trying to get themselves to where Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns are. We obviously have to work together to build that kind of brand. It’s a matter of implementation at the end of the day. “The most important thing is working on the development. I have been to coaching courses with Safa. We need to dig out the talent. So it’s not only about me going to Baroka to be the technical director, but it’s about the bigger picture. So I am there to make sure the development structures are in place." He added: "When you look at the role of a TD, it’s about taking care of technical and tactical matters and making sure that everything is done according to the philosophy of the team. It’s about me bringing what I think is best for the game because the game has evolved and I have learnt a lot." Baroka had a difficult debut campaign in the PSL last season – avoiding relegation via the playoffs – but have vowed to perform better this time round and the appointment of Khumalo shows they are determined to improve the club as a whole. "I respect the technical team that’s there. I am there to learn from the technical team and they can learn from me. If I disrespect other people’s ideas, then you are inviting failure. I go there knowing very well what situation they were in [last season], so it’s about going there and finding a better solution to make them a better team," said Khumalo. Khumalo says he is not out to prove himself in the new job, after leaving Amakhosi. He is just keen on taking on a new challenge. "At the end of the day I am getting an opportunity. I am not going out to prove myself. It’s a challenge and I like challenges. If you say you want to prove yourself, then you are inviting failure. I want to use whatever experience I have. And if things go well with Baroka and we take the club to another level, then it will be... Learn more
